Significant Trends from the Employer’s Point of View Recent trends show that there is an increased awareness of the role that people play in human enterprise and in contributing to differ- entiated performance. Why this trend? It seems that a confluence of factors has convinced corporate leaders that they need to pay attention to people differently than they have in the past. The growth in the financial markets has provided easier access to debt and equity capital. Financial capital is not the scarce commodity that it was years ago. This has fuelled growth and global expansion. However, a new dynamic has emerged. The availability of talent to generate ideas and execute them has become the limiting factor. More and cheaper technology has become available, and techno- logical breakthroughs are being developed and introduced faster. The wide accessibility of technology has meant that organizations must look elsewhere for the differentiating factor. The emergence of the knowledge economy has given rise to the pre-eminence с transformational work over transactional work. This has led to an emphasis о continuous learning and skills development, a fo- cus on talent and a belief that people are not replaceable parts in the resource pool. These factors have underscored the importance of people as the essential differentiating element in corporate performance and have made people an important concern of most business leaders. Yet man- agers continue to find measuring the value с people difficult.
