Achieving Balance in the Human Capital The global economy and automation have led to downsizing, the elimination of entitlement and limits on wage demands. In response to competitive pressures, employers, for the most part, want to take the traditional view that labour is a commodity – it is a cost of doing busi- ness. However, the economic turbulence has created a growing popula- tion of marginalized, insecure transactional workers whose supply ex- ceeds demand with regular frequency. The question of what happens to displaced workers is not re- solved. This is a social issue that is ignored at the risk of creating a have and have-not society, with political and ethical consequences that are not pleasant to contemplate. At the same time, scarcity of talent has led to an erosion of loy- alty among transformational workers. Those whose skills and abilities are in high demand are increasingly managing the capital of their ability as employees or free agents. Self-conscious human capital contributes to wage spirals in high-tech and other accelerated growth sectors. These prized workers demand both choice and enhanced total rewards: affilia- tion, career opportunity, meaningful work and good pay, benefits and quality of work/life expectations. The interests of employers and employees are two sides of the same coin. There have always been competing agendas for what em- ployers and employees want within the employment contract. The is- sues of the war for talent are not new, but the intensity of the war is. Business will ultimately respond to the human capital issue according to the fundamental interests or value proposition of stakeholders – in- vestors, customers and employees.
