158 Another significant reason for the interest in retention has to do with employee expectations. Much has been said recently about the changing employee contract. The view that today's entrants into the workforce will likely work in a number of companies and have several careers is gaining currency Lifetime careers in one organization will become the exception rather than the norm. In fact, there is a strong feeling among career and development experts that this could be a re- quirement for increased marketability in the emerging new economy. As mentioned previously, the rise of free agency is a critical fac- tor that increases and further reinforces the trend to employee mobility. Following the downsizing experiences of the '80s and the continued threat to job security, a growing percentage of the workforce has em- braced the option of self-employment and other entrepreneurial en- deavours as an alternative to a lifelong corporate career. In light of these issues, employers today are faced with the need to continuously assess whether their human resources strategy meets their business requirements an addresses their employees' needs and wants. No area of human resources management receives more atten- tion than compensation. This demonstrates that most executives and human resources professionals consider their pay programs the bulwark of their retention strategy.
