The War for Talent In today's highly competitive global economy, most corporations' challenges are overshadowed by their preoccupation with having the right people with the necessary skills to manage and grow the business. Increased market competition has intensified the war for talent. This issue is further complicated by the fact that employee attitudes an ex- pectations about work have been changing in the last two decades. Retention is often referred to as the most critical human resource issue in the mine of executives today. Why the intense concern on this issue? First and foremost, it is a numbers game. The supply pipeline is projected to be short in a number of areas. This is true for executive and management positions as well as for some specialized areas such as IT and software engineers. In addition, skill requirements have become more complex. New combinations of experience and attributes have emerged as companies have innovated or created new markets. Today, in telecommunications, IP (Internet Protocol) skills are in strong demand, overshadowing the requirements for traditional telephony skills. A new breed of IT profes- sional that combines technical skills and commercial and marketing savvy emerging as electronic commerce becomes the next frontier in a number of consumer markets. As more businesses shift to relationship selling, the profile of the sales executive starts looking different.
