ON THE MOTION OF A R/OID BODY HAVING CAVITIES FILLED WITH A HOMOGENEOUS LIQUID Prof. Joiikowsky's work „On t h e Mo t i on of a Rigficl Body Having Cavities Filled with a Homo g e n e o u s Li qu i d" w a s printed in 1885 in t he Journal of t h e Physico-Chemical So c i e t y , Vol. XVII, Pa r t s 6, 7 and 8. All works on t he problem of t h e motion'' of a rigid b o d y containing cavities filled with liquid masses which existed a t t h e time, either dealt with particular examples o r only touched o n the problem. Prof. Joukowsky's wo r k is the f i r s t general t r e a t ment of the subject, and contains, in addition t o several n e w general theorems, solutions of t h e p r ob l em f o r a numbe r of shapes of cavities, no t previously investigated a n d for multiply- connected cavities, and e-xtensions of t h e p r ob l em t o t h e c a s e of viscous fluid and t o t ha t of vortex motion. In Chapter I is discussed the general t h e o r y of motion of the body with liquid masses contained within, o n the a s s ump tion of absence of friction and of existence of the velocity potential. The internal motion of the liquid is shown t o b e c o m pletely determined b y the rotation of t he b o d y and to b e i n d e pendent on its motion of translation ( § 6). It is also shown that in the relative motion of the liquid the particle possessing t h e highest velocity will be one on the surface of the cavity (§ 6) and that-if the velocity of relative motion at any point in i he liquid becomes very high the pressure in the entire volume of the cavity becomes very high also (§ 7). From differential equations (§ 10, formula 16) the motion of the body itself is shown (§ 10) to be such as if the liquid
