184 According to the article from the 1960s through the mid – 1980s the maximum value of Tc seemed to be stuck in the low 20s. But all this changed in 1986 with the discovery of high-temperature supercon- ductivity in a slew of copper oxide-based compounds. The article goes on to say that though it was an exciting time, the leading BCS theory didn’t explain the absence of resistance in these materials. Further the author tells us that there are plenty of problems with copper oxide compounds. They are hard to make in either high-purity or single crystal form. Besides the production of wires is not easy. This made scientists look for other substances. The author comes to the conclusion that by the dawn of the new millennium the superconducting state could be achieved with varying degrees of ease and expense. In my opinion the text is informative and up-to-date, but rather hard to understand.
