Strategies focused on downsizing and flattening, to make the organization more cost- effective and better able to adapt. The ramifications of these strategies on the nature of work were enormous. The re-engineering of the corporation has emphasized "tran- sitory" and "spiral" career paths. This means that the most successful workers in the new workplace will be those who have two important qualities. First, the successful worker will be a self-directed problem- solver, capable of freelancing or working with minimal supervision. Second, the more valued worker will willingly combine lateral move- ment and the ability to adapt to multifunctional requirements in their career path. This means valuing a worker who is willing to invest in learning and take functional detours in the promotion chain. In a broad sense, the changing workplace involves a fundamental shift from transactional to transformational work. This means changing the assembly-line, specialization approach to one that is functional and problem solving. Transactional work that is routine and highly struc- tured will increasingly give way to automation or discount employment. Work that involves multiple skill sets and situational problem solving will demand premium remuneration. Those workers most likely to succeed will be those who can adapt to a constantly changing work environment by acquiring new skills and honing their problem-solving techniques. The traditional transactional worker will be increasingly replaced by automation or forced to discount his or her labour.
