Теоретическая грамматика английского языка
This example demonstrates the fact that in the case 'ffim I like' the situation for a non-native speaker is rather difficult to construe unless we know it exactly. There may be more complicated case. Wliat it is difficult to understand - the communicative value of the sentence. Unless one knows the exact context, in this cormection the following example can be introduced: "You be quiet". This sentence can be understood as "you be quiet" and "you be quiet". Both variants are possible but only the knowledge of the context makes it possible to choose the correct one. e.g. "Don't tell me to be quiet, you be quiet". Although, we understand that in another context the second variant is also possible. Things become even more difficult when we are dealing with cases of grammatical emission or ellipses. By the word "difficult" we mean the problem for non-native speakers of English. As we know fi'om grammatical books in the case of ellipses the omitted words may be recovered. e.g. She can't sign tonight, so she won't [sign tonight]. Visit me tomorrow if you wish [to visit me]. Nowadays ellipsis is registered as a part of a general syntax of modern English. e.g. 1. - Let us not discuss all this matters now. -Why not? • 2. - Who did the work? - Andrew. Questions for self-control: 1. What is the aim of the flmctional Syntax? 2. What does the flmctional approach to the language mean? 3. What does linguistic pragmatics study?
