Mother is out shopping. One should distinguish between the predicate and the predicative. The predicative is the nominal part of a compound nominal predicate and may be expressed by a noun, an adjective, a numeral, a pronoun, an infinitive, an ing-tovm and sometimes an adverb. e.g. He wasn't an artist; but he liked to create artistic things. It was getting dark. The book is very amusing. This suit-case is mine. My first thought was to ask him for a help. Everybody is in. Questions for self-control: 1. What are the main parts of the sentence? 2. Give the definition. 3. What can they be expressed by? Secondary parts of the sentence: the Object, the Adverbial Modifier, the Attribute, the Apposition. Independent elements of the sentence: the Direct Address, the Parenthesis, the Interjection. On the whole the theoiy of the English secondary parts of the sentence is one of the least developed. The usual classification of these parts into The Object, The Adverbial Modifier, The Attribute, The Apposition, The Direct Address, The Parenthesis and The Interjection is imiversally accepted though some scholars reject it altogether. The Object is the part of a sentence which stands in close relation to a verb completing, restricting or in any other way modifying its meaning. Objects differ from one another by their morphological composition (that is by the part of speech), by the type of their relation to the action expressed by the verb. So Objects are words which modify verbs and adjectives. They complete their meaning indicating the person, object or phenomenon which the action of the predicate verb affects. Objects may be 33
