Теоретическая грамматика английского языка

e.g. My task is not to accuse or acquit; my task is to thorougMy investigate, to clearly define, and to consistently systemize the facts. The use or non-use of the infinitive marker depends on the verbal environment of the Infinitive. The "bare infmitive" is used, besides the various analytical forms, with modal verbs (except ought and used), with verbs of physical perceptions, with the verbs let, bid, make and help (optionally), know (experience), with a few verbal phrases of modal nature (had better, would rather, would have...), with the relative-inducive 'Why...?/Why not...?' The infmitive has the following functions in the sentence; 1) the subject e.g. To speak with her was a real pleasure. 2) a part of compound predicate e.g. The important thing is to repeat all the rales. 1 must do it at once. 3) an object e.g. He promised to come in time. I am ready to help him. 4) an attribute e.g. Here is the article to be translated at once. 5) adverbial modifiers of different meanings e.g. He stopped to read a notice (adverbial modifier of рифозе). I am too excited to be quiet (adverbial modifier of comparison). 6) a parenthesis e.g. To tell the truth, I was disappointed by that letter. 7) a part of complex object The complex object consists of a noun in the common case or a pronoun in the objective case and an infinitive, e.g. I saw him cross the street. I know him to have said that. He ordered the children to stop talking. I hate you to talk like that. I want you to help me. 8) the complex subject The complex subject consists of a noun in the common case or a pronoun in the nominative case and an infinitive. In the complex subject the infinitive is always used with the particle to. e.g. He is said to be a famous actor, - He was seen to cross the street. He was made to repeat the rule. The child seems to be asleep. He is likely to succeed. 20
